CITY OF CORTLAND – Mayor Scott Steve announced that due to project delays and the approach of colder weather a decision has been made to delay the final course of paving on Main Street until spring. With this decision, Main Street will remain one way through the winter with reverse angle parking and two-way traffic to begin next year.

Mayor Steve attributed the decision to hold off on final paving, in part, to the impending cold weather, and design and engineering issues that have delayed the project. “The community has endured the disruption for nearly three years. Unfortunately we are running out of time this season to ensure the final finishes meet our expectations,” Steve said.

While final paving will not occur this year, crews will continue to install new sidewalks and decorative pavers. Landscaping and planting will also continue in the coming weeks.

Temporary striping will be installed to maintain one-way traffic and existing pull-in parking until spring.

Mayor Steve said, “Cortland will be celebrating its 125th anniversary as a City in 2025 and it makes sense to officially unveil our new Main Street and reinvigorated downtown as part of that celebration.”

The multi-million dollar renovation of Main Street includes new storm sewer, water lines and upgrades to sanitary sewer as well as public fiber optic access and a completely re-built streetscape. The project began in 2017 as part of the New York State Downtown Revitalization initiative when the City was awarded a $10 million dollar grant to support the street work as well as the rehabilitation of downtown buildings. The project design began in 2019 with construction commencing in 2023.

While the final paving of Main Street will be delayed until the spring, work on Groton Avenue continues slightly ahead of schedule. Crews are finishing final grading this week with base paving occurring between Homer Ave and Main Street beginning Wednesday.
